Permanent Consulting is an international strategic consulting company specializing in the repair of landscapes impacted by destructive agricultural practices and poor land management tactics. We work within and beyond the agricultural sector to regenerate land of all varieties, in all climates, around the globe.
Our mission is to develop resilient systems of production that support the indefinite requirements of civilization through environmental stewardship. We achieve this primarily through leveraging the principles of Regenerative Agriculture, which simultaneously establish food security and restore life-sustaining ecosystem services previously interrupted by human activity.
We provide consulting and advisory services, as well as project management, design and education in four main industries: Food Security, Development Aid, Regenerative Development, and Disaster Preparedness.
Additional services include: aerial mapping/imagery, soil testing, Soil FoodWeb analysis, land planning, watershed management and restoration, organic agricultural conversion, property assessment, renewable energy solutions, and waste management.
Ryan Hill is an international Regenerative Agriculture and Land Management professional, and founder of Permanent Consulting – where he designs and deploys innovative solutions to cohesively integrate civilization with Nature and create permanent societies.
His focus is eliminating reliance on the destructive, extractive practices of conventional agriculture, by building modern farming systems with cutting-edge strategies that repair and regenerate the environment.
The perspective of Permanent Consulting is simple and straightforward: take care of our habitat so it can provide for its inhabitants. This lens is borrowed in part from the ethics of Permaculture, with a stronger focus on environmental protection. Fundamentally, we need very few things to survive: clean air, clean food, clean water, shelter, and community. But the natural mechanisms that provide these necessities are abused and taken for granted by modern economic imperatives. Left unchecked, continued exploitation of our ecosystems will trigger the collapse of human civilization.
Over the centuries, agricultural technology has enabled our populations to flourish. But the industrialization of farming has led us down a dark path. Wherever industrial agriculture is practiced, we see a massive loss in biodiversity and destabilization of the surrounding ecosystem. Large-scale monocrops, removal of perennial forests and grasslands for cattle, application of toxic chemicals, and use of heavy machinery all contribute to the demolition of organic life and ecological resilience. Operating from outdated and exploitative models, as well as short-sighted greed has created a plethora of colossal downstream issues: the depletion of aquifers, rapid soil loss, desertification, destruction of forests, and climate change.
Throughout history, there echoes a clear warning sign. The downfalls of our most advanced and established societies were rooted in agriculture and failure to adapt to change. As these empires ballooned, stagnated and descended into turmoil, poor land management and unstable food supplies pushed them to the brink. If we fail to observe the pattern and evolve our approach, we will be doomed to repeat the cycle. But this time, the scale of the crisis is global.
Modern agriculture has forgotten that our existence on Earth is a holistic enterprise. To ignore the health and intelligence of Nature is to ignore our own. We are as much a part of the fragile web of life as any other plant, animal, or bacteria. However, for better or worse, our impact on the system is exponentially greater. Acknowledging this responsibility radically changes how we interact with, and care for, our planet.
Through education and collaborative execution, we believe it is possible to build a resilient, permanent civilization. It begins with environmental stewardship. Repairing the elements that support broad ecosystem health is the critical foundation of our existence. By managing our landscapes through the regenerative model, and teaching others to do the same, we can establish high-yielding systems of production that not only repair the damage done to our agricultural lands, food quality, and environment at large but enable them to thrive indefinitely. Thereby conquering the greatest challenges confronting civilization in the 21st century.
Our 2 governing ethics of conduct are: 1. Care of the Earth, and 2. Provide for people while providing for Nature. The ecosystem services provided by Nature are fundamental to supporting life on Earth. Our care for the planet allows us to care for our people and provide their basic necessities indefinitely.
Starting as a professional poker player, it wasn't until sustaining a debilitating back injury during a near-death experience that Ryan would begin to radically alter course. Left without recovery solutions from mainstream medicine, He turned to alternative health and wellness modalities, which led him to question the modern ways of Western society and the grim path they were paving for humanity.
When he traced the roots of the biggest environmental and climate issues of our time, he was brought to a single industry: industrial agriculture. With a few nudges from synchronicity and intuition, Ryan stumbled on a deep purpose in helping to secure the future of human civilization by evolving the way we engage with Nature and ushering the transition to a regenerative agricultural model.
In 2012, Ryan packed up his life and began travelling the world to learn from the industry's leading minds, beginning with The Permaculture Research Institute on Australia’s Gold Coast, where he was mentored by Geoff Lawton.
After co-founding VertGen Farms on Vancouver Island, and beginning freelance consulting in Permaculture, soil health, watershed management and regenerative solutions, Ryan returned to Australia to step into the role of Assistant Manager at the Permaculture Research Institute, alongside Lawton, which led him to directing development aid in India with the not-for-profit Billions In Change.
Today, Ryan Hill is an international Regenerative Agriculture and Land Management professional. He founded Permanent Consulting in 2015, where he engages with private and public organizations in 4 major areas: Food Security, Development Aid, Regenerative Development, and Disaster Preparedness.
His mission is to design and deploy innovative solutions to harmonize human civilization with Nature and create permanent settlements by eliminating our reliance on the destructive practices of industrial agriculture.
